Ted Sablay, Guitar, The Killers, Solo Artist
Malia's music theory coaching helped me connect music theory to the practice of songwriting. By learning how to break down my ideas into components and recombine them into complete songs, I completed and released my first solo album earlier this year. Thanks, Malia, for your help in getting to the other side!

The first thing you notice about Dr. Malia is her passion. We met through a mutual
friend and instantly connected over our love of all things musical. Having had music
theory in various iterations during my formative and higher education, it was always a
challenge to me. I can sight sing and read music, but the larger theories that apply to
my field proved a bit elusive to me. When I took Malia's master class course in the
summer of 2020, I remember telling her that I had some experience with music
theory, but still felt very remedial. It was the first time, in a long time that I put
myself in the learner's seat. It truly was one of the best things that I could have done
to further my music education. Dr. Malia truly shed some light on a tough subject for
me. She was patient, she was informative and most importantly she created an
environment where we all felt safe to explore a heady subject matter and ask
questions big or small. She also provided us with tools to refer back to should the
need arise. I would highly recommend any opportunity you to learn from Dr. Malia,
wether it be a lecture she is giving or through her amazing educational tools that she
has created to help all levels of musicians in the world.

Malia made theory and music accessible! I hadn't been in a theory class in years, and when I was, I could never grasp the concepts or the why. Malia's class was refreshing, fun, and useful. The knowledge I gained makes me want to incorporate it in any style of music that I play. The materials incorporated were things I wish were available when I studied music. Now I use them for fun to expand my musicality!

This course not only included all the information necessary to write a studio policy, but I can see myself using this as a roadmap to creating clear and concise communication with future students and/or their parents about all aspects of music lessons. Dr. Roberson does a great job of providing answers to many of the "how-do-I-handle" questions that should be addressed in a studio policy and reviewed before lessons even begin. I definitely recommend this course to anyone thinking about private music instruction.
